The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has ordered the immediate closure of the Nyarkotey University College of Holistic Medicine and Technology, citing serious regulatory violations, including the operation of unaccredited programmes.
The directive follows the arrest of the institution’s founder, Raphael Nyarkotey Obu, along with its registrar and a director, during a joint operation by GTEC and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
GTEC revealed that the institution has been operating without accreditation, offering an unapproved Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programme in Naturopathy and Holistic Medicine with various specialisations—actions deemed a breach of Ghana’s tertiary education regulations.
In an interview with Citi News on Friday, August 1, Jerry Sarfo, GTEC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, stated:
“We have asked the institution to shut down and provide evidence of the same by the 8th of August. They are to cease operations and not admit any new students until accreditation is sorted.”
He added that all forms of advertising, including online promotions and billboards, must be halted immediately.
GTEC has also directed Mr. Nyarkotey Obu to stop using the title “Professor”, as the Commission has no record of a legitimate professorship being conferred on him. He is required to issue a public disclaimer by August 8, 2025.
“We have informed Mr. Nyarkotey to desist from using the title ‘Professor,’ as there is no evidence he earned it,” Sarfo said. “He is also to issue a public disclaimer to that effect, latest by the 8th of August.”
This development forms part of a broader national crackdown on unaccredited tertiary institutions and the unauthorised use of academic titles, as GTEC moves to safeguard the integrity of higher education in Ghana.
