The Government of Ghana has declared a national period of mourning, directing that all flags be flown at half-mast following the tragic military helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two cabinet ministers.
The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, as the officials were traveling to Obuasi for official engagements.
Among the victims were:
- Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
- Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation
- Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC
- Samuel Aboagye, Former Parliamentary Candidate
- Three military personnel, including a flying officer and two sergeants
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, in announcing the directive, said:
“The President and the government extend condolences to the families of our comrades who died in service to the country. All flags are to fly at half-mast until further notice.”
The Ghana Armed Forces is expected to release further details as investigations continue into the cause of the crash, which has plunged the nation into mourning.
