The annual Damba Festival of the Gonja people took on a solemn and unifying tone this year as it was dedicated to the memory of national heroes who perished in the recent helicopter crash, as well as Gonja lives lost in the Gbeniyiri conflict with the Lobis.
The King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii Kunuto Jewu Soale I, conveyed his message through Yapeiwura A.B.T. Zakariah at the Jakpa Palace, calling for peace and unity as the bedrock of development.
He urged government to support the codification of customs and succession practices to prevent recurring disputes and highlighted the urgent need to prioritise education in the Savannah Region. He appealed for contributions to the Bii Kunuto Fund, launched in 2022 to support brilliant but needy students in Gonjaland.
This year’s festival was marked under the theme: “Building a Brighter Future for the Savannah Region and Gonjaland Through the Bii Kunuto Educational Fund.”
The Yagbonwura also expressed appreciation to security services for their role in managing the Gbeniyiri conflict in the Sawla and Bole districts.
Representing Vice President Jane, Savannah Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awurbe reaffirmed government’s commitment to peace in the area. He disclosed that a mediation committee had been formed to address the conflict, stressing that the Yagbonwura remains the allodial owner of land in Gonjaland.
National PRO of the Gonja Youth Association, Malik Mankir, also appealed to Gonjas to cease hostilities, reminding all that the Damba festival — commemorating the birth of Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W) — is firmly rooted in the Islamic principle of peace.
