Bawumia Urges NPP Delegates to Retain Him as Flagbearer Ahead of 2028 Elections

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has appealed to party delegates to retain him as the flagbearer to secure the party’s swift return to power.

Addressing delegates at Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, September 10, Dr. Bawumia argued that Ghana’s electoral history shows voters reward consistency when parties maintain the same presidential candidate across multiple election cycles.

He cited examples from both the NPP and the NDC, including John Agyekum Kufuor, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and John Dramani Mahama, all of whom eventually won after repeated contests.

Dr. Bawumia stressed that a similar strategy could deliver victory for the NPP in 2028.

“What is also remarkable in Ghana’s election history is that since 1992, every President has handed over to someone he had contested against in an earlier contest. With President Mahama set to hand over in 2029, the trend suggests he will hand over to me — unless we present a new candidate. But the data shows no first-timer has ever won Ghana’s presidential elections,” he said.

The former Vice President added that he remains the most marketed and prepared candidate, with broad national recognition, proven temperament, and a unifying character.

“My character, temperament and unifying nature are well known. I urge you to vote for me on 31st January 2026, to lock in the benefits of maintaining a presidential candidate,” he noted.

The remarks came as Dr. Bawumia began a three-day engagement with Constituency Executives in the Ashanti Region ahead of his national campaign, aimed at formally informing Executives of his plans and directly engaging delegates at the polling station level.
