Cedi Remains Among World’s Best-Performing Currencies – Bank of Ghana
The Ghana cedi remains one of the best-performing currencies globally, despite seasonal trade pressures and weaker remittance inflows, according to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama.
Speaking at the opening of the Monetary Policy Committee meeting on September 15, 2025, Dr. Asiama noted that while remittances had slowed compared to previous periods, the cedi’s appreciation had been largely unaffected.
“Despite the seasonal pressures and a slowdown in remittance inflows in recent weeks, the cedi remains one of the strongest currencies globally. Year-to-date, it has appreciated by about 21% as of September 12,” he stated.
He credited the cedi’s resilience to sound monetary policy, stronger foreign-exchange reserves, and tighter regulatory oversight.
Ghana recorded a US$6.2 billion trade surplus in the first eight months of 2025, supported by robust gold exports and higher cocoa receipts. Gross international reserves stood at US$10.7 billion in August, covering about 4½ months of imports.
Dr. Asiama further noted that the cedi now performs alongside major currencies such as the Russian ruble, Swedish krona, Norwegian krone, Swiss franc, euro, and British pound.
The currency’s strength has helped lower import costs, ease inflationary pressures, and reduce the burden on businesses that depend on foreign inputs.
However, analysts caution that sustaining the momentum will depend on export growth, stable remittance flows, and mitigating risks from volatile commodity markets.
The Governor assured that the central bank will remain vigilant and take necessary interventions to safeguard stability.
