The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has ordered the Royal Nursing College in Kumasi to cease operations with immediate effect after discovering that the school’s accreditation expired nearly four years ago.
In a letter dated September 12, 2025, signed by GTEC’s Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, the Commission revealed that the college’s accreditation lapsed on December 16, 2021. It stressed that the institution cannot operate as a tertiary institution until it secures fresh accreditation from both GTEC and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
The directive followed a meeting on August 28, 2025, involving officials of the college, GTEC, the NMC, and the Ministry of Health’s Health Training Institutions Unit.
Under the directive, the college has been instructed to:
- Submit staff documentation — including appointment letters, CVs, and proof of regular remuneration to verify employment status of staff.
- Cease operations immediately — and collaborate with its mentor institution, the University of Cape Coast (UCC), to develop a teach-out plan for students admitted between 2021 and 2024.
- Suspend admissions — halting intake of new students until accreditation is fully restored.
Additionally, the college must address identified deficiencies and present verifiable evidence of corrective actions. A joint verification exercise by GTEC and the NMC will follow before any consideration of restoring accreditation.
GTEC underscored that the matter must be treated with “the utmost urgency and seriousness it deserves.”
