The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has conducted a large-scale operation against illegal mining in the Atwima Mponua Forest in the Ashanti Region.
The raid, carried out on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, was executed by a joint task force comprising NAIMOS operatives, the Forestry Commission, and troops from the 4th Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Army. The target area was Anhwiafutu in the Nkawie Forest District of the Offin Shelter Belt, following intelligence provided by local residents.
Arriving at dawn, the task force discovered excavators and other signs of galamsey activities. The illegal miners, on spotting the team, fled the scene, abandoning their equipment.
The task force successfully immobilized nine excavators and seized three pickup vehicles (two Toyota Hiluxes and one Nissan) hidden within the forest. Due to the absence of low-bed trucks, the excavators could not be moved out of the area.

Other items destroyed during the operation included:
- Five changfan machines
- Several water pumping machines
- Fuel dumps and old excavator engines
- Personal belongings of the miners, which were set ablaze
The team also raided a house believed to have been occupied by 12 Chinese illegal miners, who fled before the raid. A search revealed 18 excavator batteries, 31 buckets of grease, seven gas cylinders, a mini car washing machine, and an excavator radiator.
According to NAIMOS, surveillance has been intensified in the area, and the seized equipment remains under guard as part of government’s renewed clampdown on galamsey operations across the country.
