Three Ghanaians have filed a petition with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), seeking an investigation into former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over comments he made regarding donations to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2024 election campaign.
The petitioners — Solomon Owusu, Andrew Appiah-Danquah, and Edwin Godwin Buckman, all members of the Movement for Change — argue that Dr. Bawumia’s own public admissions raise questions about the source of funding, the legality of the donations, and possible abuse of public office.
Dr. Bawumia reportedly stated that he personally donated over 300 Nissan Navara pickups to the NPP campaign, which he described as an unprecedented contribution in the party’s history.
Speaking on TV3’s Big Issue segment on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Solomon Owusu questioned how such a donation could have been financed by Dr. Bawumia alone:
“We know the salary of a Vice President, and even if he saved every cedi for his eight years in office, plus what he earned as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, it could not buy over 300 Navaras. At a conservative cost of $60,000 per vehicle, that’s about $18 million — far beyond his legitimate earnings.”
The petitioners also referenced a CDD-Ghana report that highlighted the soaring costs of political campaigns, with the latest estimates suggesting that winning the presidency in Ghana could cost as much as $200 million.
They further raised concerns about whether the vehicles may have been funded by external actors, which would contravene Ghana’s campaign finance laws prohibiting foreign entities from sponsoring political parties.
“Was it Dr. Bawumia’s personal funds, his network of friends, or foreign assistance? These are critical questions that demand answers,” Owusu stressed.
The petition urges the OSP to investigate the funding sources, determine compliance with campaign finance regulations, and establish whether any breaches of the law occurred.
