The Rubber Processors Association of Ghana has warned that the country could lose over $100 million annually if urgent measures are not taken to add value to raw rubber before export.
The caution comes amid a surge in unregulated raw rubber exports, with foreign companies reportedly exploiting Ghana’s lower prices to their benefit.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Friday, September 19, 2025, the Association’s Chairman, Emmanuel Akwasi Owusu, said Ghana is losing jobs and revenue as raw rubber sells for around $600 compared to $800 on the international market. He stressed that processing locally could generate an extra $900 per ton, amounting to annual losses of about $100 million.
The Association is urging stricter enforcement of regulations to protect local processors, boost value addition, and create more jobs for Ghanaians.
