The Ghana Police Service has temporarily shut down the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region and withdrawn all personnel following a violent attack on the facility by some residents.
A statement issued by the Eastern Regional Police Command on Sunday, September 21, 2025, said the decision was taken on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) after a mob of angry youth stormed the station and nearby barracks, hurling stones, clubs, and other weapons.
The unrest was sparked by the death of a suspect, Bright Kena, also known as D-ball, who had been arrested for unlawful entry and stealing. He reportedly died while receiving treatment at the Community Hospital in Kukurantumi.
Police said the incident occurred around 7:00 a.m., when the group attempted to set the station on fire. A reinforcement team was dispatched to the scene and managed to restore calm.
The Command has since engaged the deceased’s family and community leaders, assuring them of a thorough investigation. Both the Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have launched independent inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.
Authorities confirmed that video footage of the attack is being reviewed to identify those involved, with a pledge to arrest and prosecute all perpetrators.
In the statement, Superintendent George Peprah Mills, Staff Officer of the Eastern Region, appealed to the public to avoid violence and seek redress through lawful means.
“The Command would like to once again urge the public to use lawful means to resolve issues instead of resorting to violence,” the statement concluded.
