The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a notorious armed robbery syndicate that has been terrorising rural banks across several regions in the country.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, announced the breakthrough at a press conference held at the National Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, September 24, 2024. He described the operation as a “major breakthrough” in the Service’s fight against organised crime.
According to the IGP, the Service detected a disturbing trend of coordinated robberies on rural banks over the past year. Surveillance, intelligence gathering, and tip-offs from informants helped police track down the gang’s movements across five regions: Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti.
Arrests and Seizures
The carefully coordinated operation led to the arrest of 10 suspects, while three others were killed during a gun battle with police operatives. A manhunt has been launched for the remaining gang members.
Recovered items included:
- 14 weapons (AK-47 rifles, pump action guns, pistols, and a single-barrel gun)
- Large quantities of ammunition
- Several vehicles
- Mobile phones
Public Commendation
Dr. Yohuno praised the Ashanti Regional Police Commander and his intelligence team for their role in the successful operation and extended appreciation to the public for volunteering crucial information.
“I wish to sincerely thank members of the public who volunteered credible information to the police that contributed to this breakthrough,” he said, encouraging more public cooperation.
Police Commitment
The IGP reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to fighting violent crime:
“We will continue to make life uncomfortable for criminal elements in our society. We will continue to pursue you till you are brought to justice.”
