A tragic incident struck the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in the early hours of Friday, October 3, 2025, when armed assailants attacked the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.
The assault, which occurred around 1:30 a.m., left one officer dead and another seriously injured.
Victims Identified
- Rafiq Mohammed, an Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII), was killed instantly after sustaining fatal gunshot wounds.
- His colleague, Oppong Daniel (AICOII), suffered severe injuries to the jaw and back and is currently receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.
Evidence and Response
Police investigators who arrived at the scene recovered:
- AK-47 shell casings, and
- A GIS service rifle with registration number GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646.
A joint response team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Gambaga Municipal Police Commander, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North Regional Intelligence Officer of GIS, was immediately dispatched to secure the area and begin investigations.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances of the attack and to track down those responsible. Security officials have assured the public that updates will be provided as the case progresses.
