A 30-year-old man, Sherif Abdulai, believed to be behind a series of mysterious murders in the Wa Municipality, has confessed to killing 15 people since 2021 following his arrest by the Upper West Regional Police Command.
The suspect was apprehended at Adabiya, a suburb of Wa, after weeks of coordinated intelligence operations. His arrest came shortly after another suspect, Mahamuda Lamin, 25, was captured earlier this month in connection with the killing of Mr. Yahaya Issah, a night watchman at Dobile near the Wa New Market.

According to ACP Francis Yiribarie, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, Abdulai — an ex-convict — confessed during interrogation that he was behind several killings in Wa and parts of the Savannah Region, targeting mostly night watchmen and mentally challenged persons.

“During questioning, the suspect confessed to killing 15 people in Wa Municipality since 2021,” ACP Yiribarie stated. “He also admitted to killing three madmen and two watchmen at Bole, one madman in Banda Nkwanta, and a madwoman in Bamboi. He carries his victims on his shoulder and buries them secretly in nearby bushes.”
Police investigations revealed that Abdulai was found with items belonging to the late Yahaya Issah, including a Villoan keypad mobile phone and a solar-powered portable radio. A search at his hideout near the Wa Airstrip uncovered a cutlass with specially designed edges, a bicycle, and a sack containing meat, all believed to be linked to his victims.
The police say forensic examinations are underway on the recovered items, while investigations continue to determine whether other individuals were involved. The second suspect, Mahamuda Lamin, has been remanded by the Wa Magistrate Court and is expected to reappear on October 21, 2025.
ACP Yiribarie praised the public for their cooperation and commended the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, for his leadership and support during the investigation.
“I wish to assure residents that the Police remain resolute in our commitment to rid our society of criminal elements and ensure justice for families affected by these crimes,” he emphasized.
The confession brings a sense of relief and closure to residents of Wa and nearby communities who have endured years of fear due to the spate of unsolved murders of night watchmen in the area. Police have vowed to pursue the case until all those involved are brought to justice.
