Ghana Welcomes 824 New Lawyers in Grand Call to the Bar Ceremony

Ghana’s legal fraternity has grown stronger as 824 new lawyers were officially called to the Bar in a colourful ceremony held in Accra, marking a proud moment for the country’s justice system and the next generation of legal minds.

The solemn yet joyous event, presided over by Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, saw hundreds of families, mentors, and dignitaries celebrate the hard work and resilience of the new lawyers — each now qualified to serve as barristers and solicitors of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Among the standout achievers was Latifa Teiya Fuseini, who emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student, earning the prestigious John Mensah Sarbah Award for academic excellence and professional distinction. Her achievement stands as a beacon of hope for young women aspiring to break barriers in the legal profession.

In another inspiring moment, Nana Danquah Adjei Domson, just 21 years old, was called to the Bar, becoming one of Ghana’s youngest lawyers. His remarkable journey from student to legal professional at such a tender age has already captured national admiration.

Adding a touch of star power to the celebration, renowned media personality Serwaa Amihere officially transitioned from the newsroom to the courtroom, earning her place among Ghana’s newest legal practitioners. Her achievement reflects the versatility and determination of modern Ghanaian professionals who continue to redefine success across multiple fields.

Why Ghana Needs More Lawyers

This year’s call to the Bar comes at a time when Ghana faces a growing demand for legal professionals. With an estimated one active lawyer for every 2,000 citizens, the country’s legal system continues to grapple with limited access to justice — especially in rural areas where many people have little or no legal representation.

Institutions like the Legal Aid Commission remain under pressure, with only a few dozen lawyers handling thousands of cases nationwide. The arrival of 824 new lawyers offers hope for expanding legal access, strengthening the rule of law, and promoting fairness in both civil and criminal proceedings.

Beyond the courtroom, lawyers play a vital role in corporate governance, human rights advocacy, policy formulation, and national development. A stronger legal community helps protect citizens’ rights, ensures accountability, attracts foreign investment through sound regulation, and promotes stability in governance — all key ingredients for sustainable progress.

The Road Ahead

This year’s Call to the Bar not only celebrates personal triumphs but also underscores the growing dynamism of Ghana’s legal community. As these 824 lawyers take their oath, the nation looks forward to their contributions in building a more just, equitable, and prosperous society.

Congratulations to all the new lawyers — your journey has just begun, and Ghana is proud of you!
