It’s been another busy week across Newham, full of lessons, change, and opportunities to get involved.
From serious council updates to hopeful community projects, here’s what’s been happening, and how it affects our African and Caribbean families in the borough.
Housing Scandal Shakes the Borough
Newham Council has launched an investigation into a serious housing fraud case, after reports that an officer allegedly allocated 35 social homes to people who weren’t eligible.
The revelation came from a whistle-blower, and the council says it’s tightening internal systems and fully cooperating with investigators.
For many African and Caribbean families who depend on affordable housing, this story hits close to home.
It’s a reminder that transparency and fairness in housing matter, especially when our communities often face longer waiting lists and overcrowded living conditions.
Hot Digital Take:
“This is why community voices are vital. If you’ve faced housing delays or unfair treatment, speak up, document everything, and connect with advocacy groups like REIN or the Newham Community Project.”
Cleaner Streets, Greener Habits
On a brighter note, the council has begun rolling out food waste recycling bins across parts of Newham, part of a push to make the borough cleaner and more sustainable.
For many African households, where cooking is central to daily life, separating food waste might take some getting used to.
But the benefits are real: less waste, cleaner estates, and compost that can be reused in local community gardens.
Remembrance and Reflection
This Sunday, 9 November, Newham joins the nation in marking Remembrance Sunday, a day of honouring those who have served in war.
Services will be held at the East Ham Cenotaph and at local churches across the area.
It’s a moment not just for reflection, but for representation.
African and Caribbean soldiers played vital, often unacknowledged, roles in both World Wars.
By showing up, we ensure that their bravery and sacrifice are remembered with dignity.
