Ghanaian journalist Erastus Asare Donkoh has criticised the continued detention of nurse Salomey Awiti Baffoe, describing it as shameful and questioning its necessity.
In a Facebook post, the journalist expressed frustration over the nurse’s continued custody, arguing that her detention serves no meaningful purpose.
“It is shameful we are still keeping this nurse in custody. It serves no purpose!!” he wrote.
Baffoe was arrested on September 17, 2026, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service over allegations that she helped facilitate the redistribution of videos published by UK-based Ghanaian TikToker Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known as Ghana Jollof.
According to the police, the nurse allegedly recruited individuals to circulate the videos on various social media platforms and received money from Kodua to facilitate the activity.
Some of the videos reportedly contained offensive and inciting statements, including claims of a near coup d’état at the Jubilee House.
Baffoe has been charged with abetting the publication of false news under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). She has pleaded not guilty.
Her continued detention has drawn criticism following the Accra High Court’s rejection of her bail application on September 24, 2026.
Her lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, argued that the police had completed investigations directly involving his client and seized her mobile phones, making her continued detention unnecessary.
However, the prosecution opposed the application, citing ongoing investigations and concerns that her release could lead to interference with witnesses.
The court denied the application but directed the prosecution to expedite its investigations.
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association has also expressed disappointment with the court’s decision, with its Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Jefferson Asare Danquah, reaffirming the association’s support for the nurse.
Donkoh’s comments have added to public scrutiny of the case, particularly the justification for keeping Baffoe in custody while proceedings continue.
The nurse remains presumed innocent until proven guilty. She is expected to reappear in court on September 30, 2026.
