The IGP’s Special Operations Team allegedly shot and killed a man at “Waterworks,” a suburb of Tamale. The victim who appear to be in his late 30s, reportedly tried to ride away on a motorbike when he encountered police.
The tragedy happened near a popular football park and the young man’s body has since been deposited at a hospital morgue for preservation and further procedures.
This follows a crackdown by the Special Operations Team, which was deployed to Tamale to clamp down on drug peddling, robbery, and other criminal activities.
In a related operation at the Aboabo Forest enclave in Tamale, the team engaged suspected armed criminals, one suspect was killed and 32 others were arrested on charges ranging from robbery to drug-related offences.
According to Police sources, the confrontation in Aboabo Forest began when officers came under heavy gunfire; they returned fire in what they termed legitimate self-defence, leading to the suspect’s death.
The death of the suspect has sparked tension in Tamale. Some residents have expressed concern, questioning the nature and conduct of the operation by the Special Operations Team.
Others, however, praise the police for bringing “sanity” to the region, applauding efforts to tackle criminal hideouts and illicit activity.
The Northern Regional Police Command has yet to issue an official public comment concerning the killing.
It’s not yet clear whether there will be an official investigation or review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including whether police rules of engagement were properly followed.
The broader deployment of the Special Operations Team in the region, and additional arrests and seizures (e.g. at Aboabo Forest), suggest the police intend to keep up pressure on suspected criminal networks.
