Sagal Abdi-Wali arrived in Britain as a child refugee from Somalia. Today, she is heading to Parliament, a journey that could encourage Ghanaian families to think about what is possible for the next generation.
The former Camden Council leader won the Holborn and St Pancras by-election for Labour, receiving 12,292 votes. Green Party leader Zack Polanski finished second with 8,928 votes.
Abdi-Wali, 42, came to the UK at the age of six after her family fled Somalia’s civil war. She grew up in Camden and went on to become the council’s first Black woman leader.
A message for young people
In her victory speech, she spoke about belonging, giving back and helping young people believe in their future.
“I want young people to know that their background does not determine the size of their dreams,” she said.
She credited Camden with giving her family a home, an education and opportunities. Representing that community in Parliament, she said, was another way to give something back.
Why this matters to Ghanaian families
For Ghanaians living in Britain, her story offers an example of how an African background can be part of a journey into public leadership.
Many parents work hard to give their children opportunities. Seeing someone who arrived as a refugee become an MP can help broaden those ambitions to include shaping the communities and country where they live.
Her journey also puts community service in the spotlight. Getting involved in local organisations, helping neighbours and taking an interest in public decisions can be starting points for leadership.
For readers in Ghana, it offers another picture of life abroad: members of the African diaspora contributing to the places they now call home.
Turning hope into action
Abdi-Wali now faces the job of delivering for her constituents. In her speech, she promised to tackle homelessness and help young people access jobs, skills and apprenticeships.
Her election is a moment to celebrate. What she achieves in office will be the next chapter—and the test of those promises.
