More than 400 coaches have applied to become the next head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, according to former Ghana Football Association (GFA) communications director Ibrahim Sannie Daara.
Ghana are searching for a new manager following the departure of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz after two consecutive defeats in their opening matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Sannie Daara, who now works as a senior media officer at the Confederation of African Football (CAF), said the number of applications reflected the standing of Ghanaian football internationally.
“More than 400 coaches have applied for the Black Stars job,” he said.
“Most of the coaches are looking for jobs, and most of them respect Ghana due to how we play.”
A five-member committee formed by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is responsible for recommending a successor. Its report is expected to be submitted on Thursday.
The appointment comes at a critical time for Ghana, who have made a poor start to their qualifying campaign and are bottom of Group C without a point.
The Black Stars lost their opening two matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, leaving their hopes of reaching the 2027 tournament under immediate pressure.
The GFA has announced that an interim technical team will oversee Ghana’s next two qualifying matches against Somalia next month.
Both fixtures, scheduled for matchdays three and four, are set to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The matches offer Ghana an opportunity to revive their campaign, but the team will need a significant improvement in results to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Ghana, four-time African champions, are also seeking to return to the continental tournament after failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
The next coaching appointment will therefore carry considerable expectations, with supporters hoping the new leadership can restore consistency and put the national team back on track.
