Head of Communications at the British High Commission in Ghana, Bryan Wilson, has put in a suggestion that the Ghana Black Stars would be stronger at the 2026 World Cup if Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi were to be included in their world cup squad.
He noted that both have Ghanaian roots and could bring valuable competition for places and squad depth, especially given potential injuries to key Ghanaian stars.
Both Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi have had limited playing time for England’s senior team, hence making the Black Stars team a sensible option.
Bryan Wilson acknowledged the challenge of integrating the players on short notice, with Ghana’s final squad due to be announced by coach Otto Addo on 1 June 2026.
Legal experts have urged the GFA to consider the players for selection, pointing to the boost in quality they could bring, but there are those who argue against such call-ups, saying bringing in diaspora players last-minute could disrupt team chemistry or be unfair to players who helped secure qualification.
Both players are eligible to play for Ghana through hereditary, despite having represented England, earning youth and senior caps. FIFA rules allow a one-time switch if criteria are met and competitive appearances were limited.
The Ghana Football Association and the head coach will make final squad decisions in the coming months, weighing talent, fitness, and team cohesion.
