Ghana Police has shot dead a suspected notorious highway robber known as Mahamadu Gariba Kirror during an intelligence-led operation involving the National Highway Patrol Unit.
The suspect was a member of a gang responsible for violent highway robberies, particularly along the Atebubu–Yeji highway, a key route through the Bono East Region.
Police are cracking down on highway robbery and they have confirmed that their operation led to a incident, ending with Kirror being killed by officers.
The Police intensified its efforts to dismantle a notorious highway robbery syndicate linked to multiple armed robberies targeting motorists and trailer drivers across major routes, including the Tema Motorway, Achimota Forest Road, Pokuase, Amasaman, Suhum, Nkawkaw, and Juaso–Kumasi stretch.
They were arrested in coordinated police operations after violent robberies, including a residential attack took place in Peduase, Aburi.
The Ghana Police Service has stated that its enhanced intelligence-led strategy is aimed at curbing rising highway crime. Recovered items from arrests include firearms, ammunition, machetes, mobile phones and other suspected proceeds of crime.
Police continue to pursue the remaining suspects and urge citizens to share information relevant to ongoing investigations.
