The Ministry of Health has constituted a three-member investigative committee to examine allegations that the denial of emergency medical care led to the death of a 29-year-old engineer, Charles Amissah.
In a press release dated February 18, 2026, the Ministry said the action follows public concern and allegations that Mr Amissah was refused emergency medical attention on February 6, 2026, an incident that reportedly contributed to his untimely death.
The committee has been mandated to conduct a comprehensive, independent, and impartial inquiry into the matter and establish the full facts surrounding the incident.
According to the statement, the committee will investigate the sequence of events that unfolded on the day of the incident, examine the decision-making processes of health personnel involved, and identify any systemic or operational failures that may have caused delays or challenges in the delivery of emergency care.
The team is also expected to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of existing policies, protocols, and oversight mechanisms governing emergency healthcare services across the country, and to make recommendations aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.
The committee is chaired by Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa, a renowned pathologist and former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service.
Other members are Dr Henry Kwasi Bulley, a Fellow in Emergency Medicine at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and Dr Koku Awoonor-Williams, Technical Advisor to the Minister for Health.
The Ministry said the committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations on or before March 5, 2026, after which appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
Reaffirming its commitment to accountability, transparency, and patient safety, the Ministry stressed that all health facilities are required to strictly comply with established standards for emergency care, regardless of a patient’s background or circumstances.
The statement was signed by Tony Goodman, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, who assured the public that the Ministry remains determined to uphold public confidence in Ghana’s healthcare system while ensuring justice for affected families.
