A dispute between two factions of a local chieftaincy led to Police from the Central East Regional Police Command to taken over Gomoa Nyanyano, a community in the Gomoa East District of Ghana’s Central Region, located near Accra and known for its active local governance and traditional leadership structures.
Following a float procession into the town organised by one of the faction, a clash happened with the opposing faction near the chief’s palace, the confrontation quickly escalated into violence.
Two people were reported injured during the incident in which over 50 police and security personnel were deployed to restore calm and maintain order in the township.
This isn’t the first time the dispute at Gomoa Nyanyano has seen violence around chieftaincy, the area has experienced periodic disputes over leadership and succession, especially following the passing of previous leaders, a common issue in many Ghanaian communities where the death of a chief leads to competing claims.
