Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has publicly stated that he will be retiring as a Member of Parliament soon. He made the comment after meeting with his constituents at a community event.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu in the Volta Region, who was first elected MP in 2012, plans to step down from his role as Member of Parliament in the near future after years of service.
Ablakwa, who also serves as **Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. He emphasised that he’s grooming younger leaders from his constituency, including future MPs and professionals, who could take over when he retires.
He framed his decision around supporting education and leadership development, noting scholarship initiatives and efforts to prepare the next generation to become engineers, lawyers, teachers, and even future MPs.
There isn’t yet a specific retirement date mentioned, just that the move will happen “soon” as he transitions leadership and mentoring responsibilities.
In remarks to constituents, he indicated that he is **actively preparing for his succession** by “grooming successors” from within the constituency who can take up leadership roles when he leaves Parliament.
Ablakwa is not only a longstanding MP but also a senior figure in Ghanaian politics, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
In 2025 he was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, a role that has expanded his responsibilities beyond Parliament.
