The United States Marshals have arrested Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu due to extradition request submitted by the Government of Ghana. She is said to be held at the Nevada Southern Detention Centre in Pahrump, Nevada.
The arrest is part of the international cooperation between Ghana and the United States through Interpol to bring her back to Ghana to serve her sentence and face further legal procedures regarding her conviction.
She was convicted in absentia by an Accra High Court on multiple charges including causing financial loss to the state, theft, money laundering, conspiracy, and breaches of procurement laws.
The former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labor after reportedly absconding while on medical leave abroad.
She remains in U.S. custody awaiting further court proceedings related to the extradition process.
Extradition requires U.S. judicial review to determine whether legal criteria are met — including the dual criminality principle (whether the alleged offenses are also crimes under U.S. law).
