The United States has launched a large-scale military action against Venezuela and President Maduro and his wife were captured and flown out of the country.
President Donald Trump posted on social media that the operation involved United States forces which took place early Saturday morning, and a press conference was scheduled for additional details.
Explosions and low-flying aircraft were reported in the capital city Caracas and other parts of Venezuela amid heightened tensions between United States and the South American country.
The Venezuelan government declared a state of emergency, called the strikes “military aggression,” and urged citizens to mobilize against the attack.
Nothing has been confirmed yet from the U.S. military authorities, Venezuelan officials, or international observers that Maduro has in fact been captured or removed from the country.
Nor has major news agencies confirmed Trump’s announcement, but reports on casualties, the exact sequence of events, or where Maduro’s whereabout are still coming in.
Venezuela has denounced the strikes as an illegal intervention and accused the United States of seeking to seize control of it’s natural resources. Regional nations have been calling for calm and urging diplomatic channels, though responses are continuing to develop.
