The Government has formally restored Ghana’s main aviation gateway to its original name, Accra International Airport, the Ministry of Transport has announced.
In a statement released on February 23, 2026, the Ministry said the decision returns the facility to its former and internationally recognised designation, explaining that the airport was originally known as Accra International Airport before it was later renamed Kotoka International Airport.
According to the Ministry, the change is purely nominal and will not disrupt airport operations, safety protocols, flight schedules, or international travel arrangements.
Crucially, the Ministry noted that the airport’s global aviation identity remains intact. Within the records of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the airport’s code has always remained “ACC”, ensuring continuity across international aviation systems.
The renaming process will be carried out gradually and methodically. The Ministry said this will include updates to official documents, statutory instruments where required, airport signage, digital platforms, aviation publications, and related communication materials.
To ensure a smooth rollout, the Ministry appealed to the general public, industry stakeholders, and international partners to cooperate fully with the relevant authorities during the transition.
The statement, issued by the Ministry’s Public Relations Unit, concluded with an expression of appreciation to all stakeholders for their continued support, stressing that the move is intended to reinforce clarity and consistency in Ghana’s aviation identity without affecting service delivery.
With the announcement, Accra International Airport officially resumes the name under which it first entered global aviation history.
