President John Dramani Mahama was in Abuja to participate in the 68th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. The summit was being held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday, 14 December 2025.
Leaders at the summit addressed a range of important regional issues, including a Special Debate on the Future of the ECOWAS Community, reflecting concerns about political cohesion and institutional direction.
Also debated are regional security challenges and cooperation efforts including political stability and democratic governance across West Africa.
They looked at the 2025 annual report on the state of the community and get updates on mediation efforts and political transitions, including developments in Guinea.
On review wase the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) to boost regional trade. The summit deliberations concluded with a final communiqué and a joint press briefing by ECOWAS leaders.
President Mahama’s presence underscores Ghana’s commitment to regional cooperation and collective problem-solving within ECOWAS.
Earlier this week, the ECOWAS Council of Ministers unanimously endorsed Mahama as the sole ECOWAS candidate for the position of Chairperson of the African Union when the rotation comes to West Africa in 2027. This endorsement is expected to be confirmed by the Heads of State at the summit.
