Bagbin calls for improved healthcare support for MPs after Akwatia MP’s sudden death

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has reiterated the need for a comprehensive healthcare support system designed specifically to address the unique demands of parliamentary work.

His call follows the sudden death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, who passed away on July 7, 2025, at just 40 years old. His death, reportedly due to heart failure, has sent shockwaves through Parliament and the nation.

Delivering the Speaker’s remarks during the closing of the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor read a statement on Bagbin’s behalf.

“We were profoundly saddened by the untimely passing of our colleague Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, who passed away on July 7, 2025, at the youthful age of 40,” the Speaker stated.

Bagbin described the late MP’s passing as a devastating loss, adding that it underscores the intense physical and emotional demands associated with legislative duties. He said the incident should serve as a wake-up call for Parliament to act urgently.

“His demise, attributed to heart failure, is a painful reminder of the demanding nature of our calling. As a House, we must begin earnest discussion on a comprehensive healthcare support programme tailored to the unique pressures of our parliamentary work,” Bagbin emphasized.

The call adds to growing concerns over the health and well-being of public officeholders, especially in high-pressure roles, and may set the tone for future parliamentary health reforms.
