Accra, July 1, 2025 – President John Dramani Mahama is today leading the inaugural edition of Ghana’s National Day of Prayer, a landmark initiative aimed at fostering spiritual reflection, national unity, and renewed hope in the face of the country’s ongoing social and economic challenges.
The event, which is set to become an annual national tradition, brings together religious leaders, political figures, civil society organisations, and members of the public in a day dedicated to interfaith prayers and national solidarity.
Interfaith Prayers Across the Capital
The day’s activities began with a Christian interdenominational service at 8:00 a.m. at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra, followed by an Islamic prayer session at 12:00 noon at the National Mosque in Kanda.
The prayers are being offered under the themes of peace, economic recovery, national cohesion, and moral renewal—core values that organisers hope will shape the country’s development going forward.
Distinguished Spiritual Leaders in Attendance
The event is graced by two of Ghana’s most revered religious leaders:
- His Eminence Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, a globally respected Catholic figure and advocate for peace and social justice, and
- His Eminence, the National Chief Imam, Dr. Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the spiritual leader of Ghana’s Muslim community.
Their joint presence underscores the interfaith unity that the National Day of Prayer seeks to promote.
A Platform for National Healing
Organisers have expressed optimism that this inaugural observance will inspire collective responsibility and guide the nation toward renewed moral and spiritual values.
“The National Day of Prayer is not just about solemn reflection—it is about unity, responsibility, and seeking divine guidance for Ghana’s future,” a government spokesperson noted.
As President Mahama assumes his second term in office, this initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to inclusive national healing and purposeful leadership.
The National Day of Prayer is expected to become a permanent fixture on Ghana’s national calendar, providing a unique opportunity for Ghanaians of all faiths to come together in prayer for the country’s peace and progress.
