Parliamentary standoff threatens Ghana’s Legislative progress – Former Majority Leader

Abraham Ossei Aidoo, a member of Ghana’s Parliamentary Service Board and former Majority Leader, has raised concerns about the repercussions of the ongoing deadlock in Parliament, following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s indefinite adjournment of sessions due to disputes between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucuses. The contention arose over the Speaker’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, a move that has deepened partisan divisions and halted legislative progress.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Parliament Supplementary Office Complex, Aidoo emphasized the urgent need for consensus to avoid a legislative and constitutional crisis. He cautioned that the gridlock could delay essential legislative tasks, including budget approvals, potentially impacting various sectors and hindering Ghana’s overall progress. Aidoo described the situation as detrimental to Ghana’s democratic governance, warning that it threatens to stall Parliament’s crucial role in enacting laws and overseeing government actions.

He called on leaders from both parties to put Ghana’s democratic integrity and stability above political rivalry and to return to the negotiating table. “Every Ghanaian is concerned because it smacks of doom, especially since we don’t have our national budget,” Aidoo stated, expressing hope for a swift resolution.
