Reopen courts – Bolga Traditional Council appeals to Chief Justice
The Bolgatanga Traditional Council has appealed to Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and the government to reconsider the recent closure of seven courts in Ghana’s Upper East Region. This decision, effective as of October 29, 2024, was made following concerns raised by court staff and judges regarding escalating violence in Bawku.
Chief Justice Torkornoo cited the importance of prioritizing the safety of judicial personnel in justifying the closures, emphasizing the need to preserve the justice system’s integrity amid ongoing security risks. The Traditional Council, however, has voiced concerns over the closure’s effect on access to justice in the region, advocating for alternative measures that would both ensure staff safety and maintain court operations.
In a statement dated November 1, the Council urged, “The Traditional Council is also appealing to the government and the Chief Justice to reconsider their decision and reopen the courts and re-enforce the necessary security.” They further appealed to the conflicting parties to work towards peace in Bawku.
This call for peace and security has resonated with other influential groups, who are also encouraging the feuding parties to resolve their differences and contribute to regional stability.
