Essex police drop Allison Pearson case after CPS advice
Essex Police have officially closed their hate crime investigation into journalist Allison Pearson following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which concluded there was no reasonable prospect of a conviction.
The investigation stemmed from a now-deleted tweet in which Pearson incorrectly identified a group of individuals as antisemitic based on an old photograph. The tweet was later clarified to involve a Pakistani political group flag, not connected to the allegations Pearson had implied.
Essex Police emphasized their impartiality in investigating reported crimes and have requested a review of the case handling by Gwent Police’s Chief Constable, who leads the National Police Chiefs’ Council on hate crime. Pearson maintained that her criticism was directed at the police’s actions rather than any racial or religious group. The CPS noted that the evidence did not meet the threshold for prosecution.
