Wontumi FM’s Oheneba Asiedu arrested for allegedly broadcasting fake news

The Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region has arrested Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a radio and television presenter affiliated with Kumasi-based Wontumi FM/TV, on charges of publishing false information, in violation of Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Nana Asiedu was summoned by the Ashanti Regional Police Command on November 23, and upon reporting, he was immediately detained. Preparations are underway to process him for court.

The arrest follows allegations that he made false claims, suggesting that voters in the upcoming December general elections would cast their ballots for presidential candidates on different days. The Ghana Police Service described these statements as “false and likely to disturb the public peace.”
