Accra, April 7, 2025 – The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has disclosed that the government is actively exploring partnerships to re-establish a national airline, as Ghana’s current economic challenges make it difficult to undertake the project alone.
Speaking to staff at the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Minister Nikpe revealed that a shortlist of potential partners will soon be announced.
🗣️ “You are aware that we inherited an economy that is challenged, and for now, we cannot establish a national airline. So we are looking for a partnership. You know, when it comes to partnership, it will take time. We have to know who they are to partner with us to bring in a national carrier that will fly for a very long time,” he explained.
Ghana’s National Airline History
✈️ Ghana has been without a national airline for nearly two decades, following the collapse of previous state carriers:
🔹 Ghana Airways (1958 – 2004) – Suspended due to a U.S. ban linked to operational debts.
🔹 Ghana International Airlines (2005 – 2010) – Established as a successor but also ceased operations.
Efforts to Revive the National Airline
In September 2022, efforts to re-establish a new national airline gained momentum when Ashanti Airlines was selected as a potential partner for the government.
This initiative sparked renewed optimism for the launch of a rebranded ‘Ghana Airlines’, with multiple stakeholders expressing interest.
🚀 What’s Next?
✅ The government will soon announce its shortlisted partners.
✅ The decision-making process will involve assessing the financial and operational strength of potential investors.
✅ A timeline for the new airline’s launch will depend on successful partnerships and economic conditions.
