NPP’s Ablekuma North Secretary Alleges EC, Government Colluded to “Rob” Party in Parliamentary Rerun

Frederick Green, the Ablekuma North Constituency Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of colluding with the sitting government to manipulate the just-ended parliamentary rerun in the constituency.

Speaking to Channel One News on Friday, July 11—shortly after the official announcement of results—Green claimed the outcome was anticipated by the party, describing it as the result of a deliberate scheme to deny them victory.

“We are not surprised that this was going to happen because we’ve been robbed,” he said. “We won, but the EC and the sitting government did everything they could to manipulate this election. Is this the kind of democracy we want to practice in Ghana?”

According to Green, the NPP had already collated results from all polling stations in the December 7, 2024, general elections and needed only the collation from three more stations. However, the EC opted to rerun elections in 19 polling stations—a decision the party insists was not agreed upon.

“We have the pink sheets for all 19 polling stations, and we won in about 15 of them in 2024,” he stated. “So what they wanted to do was to skew us out and manipulate the electoral process. But we believe in the rule of law, so we’re calm and we accept it in good faith.”

NDC Clinches Historic Victory

Green’s allegations follow a significant win by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ablekuma North, where Ewurabena Aubynn emerged victorious with 34,090 votes, narrowly beating NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie, who secured 33,881 votes.

This victory marks only the second time since 1992 that the NDC has captured the seat—traditionally an NPP stronghold—and adds to signs of a shifting political tide in the Greater Accra Region.

Background to the Dispute

The rerun was ordered after legal disputes over unendorsed pink sheets from 19 polling stations during the December 2024 general elections. Though a High Court ruling in January 2025 directed the EC to complete collation, disagreements over the validity of scanned versus original documents led to a partial rerun.

The NPP officially boycotted the rerun, calling it a betrayal by the EC. However, their candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, defied party orders and re-entered the race with backing from grassroots supporters and several party leaders.

Violence and Fallout

The rerun was marred by violent incidents, including reported attacks on Nana Akua Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson. A police officer was also captured on video assaulting a journalist and was later interdicted by the Ghana Police Service.

Despite the tension, the Electoral Commission concluded the rerun and declared it free and fair.

Implications

The outcome of the Ablekuma North rerun not only resolves an eight-month parliamentary deadlock but also signals growing competitiveness in regions once considered political strongholds. The results are expected to have broader implications ahead of the next national elections.
