Lille condemn knife attack on fans before Bologna game
Lille has condemned a violent attack on two of its fans, calling it a “cowardly and intolerable act,” ahead of their Champions League match against Bologna on Wednesday.
The French club urged its supporters to remain vigilant following the incident. According to reports citing local police, around 80 individuals, believed to be Bologna fans, targeted approximately 30 Lille supporters outside a bar in the university district of Bologna. The attackers were reportedly armed with metal bars and belts.
Three Lille fans sustained injuries and received treatment at a hospital before being discharged.
In an official statement, Lille strongly criticized the incident, stating:
“The club unreservedly condemns this cowardly and intolerable attack, which goes against all the values of football and fan culture. We express our support to the victims of these attacks and wish them a swift recovery.”
Lille is currently vying for a Champions League last-16 play-off spot, sitting 17th in the 36-team table with seven points. Bologna, with only one point from four matches, faces the risk of elimination.
