WAEC Decries Insufficient Funding Amid Delayed WASSCE Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has expressed dissatisfaction with the GH¢25 million released by the government to offset a debt of GH¢118 million owed to the Council.

WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, John Kapi, highlighted that the amount is inadequate to facilitate the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, which remain delayed due to the government’s indebtedness.

Mr. Kapi explained that the funds barely cover a fraction of the costs needed to resume operations, including payments to technicians and other logistical requirements.

“Obviously, that [the GH¢25 million] was just a drop in the ocean as far as the amount of money required for the job we are supposed to do is concerned,” he stated. He added that the Council still owes its technicians GH¢25 million, leaving no room for other critical expenditures.

The delay in releasing the WASSCE results has raised significant concerns among students, parents, and educational institutions, as they depend on the results for university admissions and other academic pursuits.

WAEC has called on the government to urgently address the financial shortfall to ensure the timely release of the examination results and smooth operations moving forward.
