Ghana Highway Authority Condemns Theft of Steel from Tantra Hill Underpass

Accra, May 14, 2025 – The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has issued a stern condemnation following the illegal removal of steel reinforcements from the retaining wall at the Tantra Hill underpass on the Achimota-Ofankor section of the N6 highway.

The public warning comes in response to a viral video shared by the social media watchdog group, Buzzstopboys, which revealed exposed steel rebars at the underpass—evidence of tampering and possible theft.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the GHA, representing the Ministry of Roads and Highways, explained that a prior engineering inspection had already flagged localized spalling on the wall—where concrete had chipped away, revealing the steel framework beneath.

“The exposed steel reinforcements became targets for unscrupulous individuals,” the Authority noted.

Despite the damage, the GHA reassured the public that the structural integrity of the underpass remains intact and that there is no immediate danger to commuters using the route.

Plans are underway to undertake urgent repair works to prevent further deterioration and ensure the long-term durability of the structure.

The GHA also used the opportunity to remind the public that tampering with public infrastructure is a criminal offense under the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180).

“We must protect our roads together,” the statement stressed, urging citizens to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or the GHA’s Public Affairs Division.
