Probe alleged last-minute recruitments – Mahama tells Joint transition team

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on the Joint Transition Team to investigate reports of last-minute recruitments and the alleged payment of GH₵240 million to a business partner of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). This directive follows concerns raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Transition Team about the financial and operational implications of such actions on the incoming government.
During a meeting on Wednesday, Mahama underscored the importance of transparency, emphasizing that such appointments and financial transactions could burden the new administration. “There are a few signals that have been raised with respect to some contracts at the last minute that will commit the new government. I hope that the joint transition team will deal with it,” he said.
He further expressed concern about mass recruitments in ministries, departments, and agencies, describing them as potential liabilities.
Responding to the allegations, Fatimatu Abubakar, spokesperson for the current government’s transition team, denied the claims. She argued that there have been no new recruitments since the election loss and criticized the allegations as misinformation designed to create panic and unrest. Abubakar highlighted the precedent of previous administrations making appointments late in their terms without controversy.
The President-elect has tasked the Joint Transition Team with ensuring that these issues are addressed responsibly to uphold public confidence in the transition process. Both teams have committed to working collaboratively to ensure a smooth handover of power.
