Accra, Ghana – March 20, 2025 – Ghanaian media personality Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah has been released from custody, following his controversial arrest by security operatives on March 19, which triggered widespread condemnation from opposition leaders and press freedom advocates.
The host of For the Records was taken into custody under unclear circumstances, sparking criticism from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), which labeled the arrest as an attack on democracy and free speech.
Political and Media Backlash
The NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, strongly condemned the arrest, describing it as a dangerous threat to press freedom.
Similarly, Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, cautioned against the use of state security to intimidate critics of the government, urging authorities to respect democratic principles.
Afrifa Mensah’s arrest heightened concerns about political intolerance and the shrinking space for free expression in Ghana, with civil society organizations and international watchdogs calling for government accountability.
Raid on Former BoG Governor’s Residence
Meanwhile, Afenyo-Markin has visited former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, following a raid by National Security operatives at his Roman Ridge residence.
Reports indicate that heavily armed officers stormed Dr. Addison’s property, disabled the CCTV system, and conducted a thorough search, allegedly looking for hidden vaults.
These recent developments have raised alarms over the use of state security for political motives, prompting demands for an independent investigation into the actions of security agencies.
