Tourism Minister Slams MP Habib Iddrisu Over Disparaging Comment on Creative Arts Industry

Accra, Ghana – February 27, 2025
Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has condemned remarks made by Tolon MP, Habib Iddrisu, during the vetting of Deputy Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo.
During Dumelo’s vetting on February 25, 2025, Habib Iddrisu cautioned the nominee against treating his new role as if he were still in the movie industry, stating:
“You are not in your movie industry, try to be as serious as you can.”
The comment has sparked widespread backlash from stakeholders in the creative arts sector, who view it as disrespectful and indicative of the industry’s ongoing struggle for recognition.
Speaking at the launch of Heritage Month, organized by Citi FM and Channel One TV, Minister Dzifa Gomashie expressed frustration over the dismissive attitude toward the creative arts sector.
“It’s not the first time my space is being disrespected – we need to value it and appreciate it! It’s part of who we are,” she stated, highlighting the sector’s cultural and economic importance.
Additionally, a press statement from the Film Directors Guild of Ghana (FDGG), signed by National President Richard Yaw Boateng, denounced Habib’s remarks, labeling them as “reckless” and “unfortunate.”
The controversy has reignited discussions on respect for the creative industry, with many calling for greater recognition of its role in Ghana’s development.
