Chief of Staff holds emergency meeting with energy sector players to address dumsor threat
Government Holds Emergency Meeting to Tackle Looming Power Crisis
The Chief of Staff has convened an emergency meeting with key stakeholders in Ghana’s energy sector to address the country’s looming power crisis, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”
The meeting, held on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, followed a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, just a day after his inauguration. The discussions aim to stabilize power supply and avert potential nationwide outages.
Key stakeholders, including representatives from GRIDCo, WAPCo, VRA, GNPC, BOST, and other power generation companies, are actively engaged in finding both immediate and long-term solutions to the crisis.
“Extensive technical work was done last night, and several options are now being discussed. His Excellency will be briefed and is expected to provide further directives,” said John Abdulai Jinapor, MP for Yapei-Kusawgu and former Deputy Energy Minister.
The energy crisis stems from critically low fuel reserves. Key facilities such as AKSA and KTPP have less than two days’ worth of fuel, while Asogli has completely run out. Only Cenpower has reserves that could last 20.9 days, but it cannot meet national demand alone.
Acting Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu revealed that a technical committee, including John Abdulai Jinapor, Emmanuel Kofi Buah, and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has been formed to craft a detailed road map. The committee is expected to present its recommendations to the government by the end of the day.
As Ghanaians await the outcome of these high-level deliberations, the Mahama administration is moving quickly to prevent further disruptions to the nation’s power supply and ensure energy stability.
