Mahama Cancels Fuel Allowances for Political Appointees Under Cost-Cutting Reset Agenda

President John Dramani Mahama has, with immediate effect, cancelled all fuel allowances and the allocation of fuel to political appointees as part of sweeping measures to cut government spending and enforce fiscal discipline.
This directive, announced on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, by Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, forms a key component of the Mahama administration’s Reset Agenda, which seeks to re-prioritise national spending and redirect resources toward essential development sectors.
“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” the statement noted, stressing the government’s commitment to responsible governance.
The cancellation follows a series of earlier austerity actions, including a significant reduction in the size of government, trimming the number of ministerial appointments, and halting satellite TV subscriptions for government offices — including those at the Jubilee House.
President Mahama’s Reset Agenda is framed as a response to current economic challenges and rising public demand for accountability in the use of national resources.
The government says the savings from these cuts will be reallocated to priority sectors such as education, health, agriculture, and infrastructure.
