The Court of Appeal has scheduled January 30, 2025, to determine whether investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas must unmask before testifying in the ongoing fraud case against Kwasi Nyantakyi, former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
This follows an appeal by state prosecutors challenging a May 2023 High Court ruling, which ordered Anas to reveal his identity to the accused before testifying. Anas declined, delaying the trial.
The three-member appellate panel, led by Justice Anthony Oppong, will issue its verdict after receiving written submissions from both parties in December 2024.
Nyantakyi and former GFA representative Abdulai Alhassan face charges of fraud and conspiracy following Anas’ 2018 investigative exposé, Number 12. The documentary captured Nyantakyi allegedly accepting $65,000 from undercover reporters and implicated over 100 referees in bribery schemes.
Both defendants have pleaded not guilty and are out on bail of GH₵1 million each. The trial, initially stalled due to the appeal, is expected to resume on February 13, 2025, after the appellate court’s decision.
The case remains a significant chapter in Ghana’s fight against corruption in football administration.
