Accra, Ghana – March 20, 2025 – Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has alleged that operatives of the National Security Secretariat stole valuables, including cash, earrings, and necklaces, during a raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
Afenyo-Markin, addressing the press on Thursday, March 20, claimed that the raid was led by Richard Jakpa, the Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat. He stated that an undisclosed amount of money was taken from Dr. Addison’s bedroom, along with jewelry belonging to his wife.
Allegations of Theft and Abuse of Power
The Minority Leader strongly condemned the raid, calling it an unlawful act and an abuse of power.
“Some GHC10,000 on his bed could not be found. So some of these hungry party foot soldiers they use, who parade themselves as National Security Operatives, are perhaps not being paid and are using this opportunity to steal. The governor’s wife’s earrings and necklaces were also not traced. They couldn’t be found. In other words, those operatives stole these earrings and necklaces. Ghana is a matured democracy, and we should do better,” Afenyo-Markin said.
Raid Sparks Widespread Concerns
The heavily armed operatives, some reportedly wearing balaclavas and wielding AK-47 rifles, allegedly disabled the CCTV system before searching the house.
Eyewitnesses claim the raid at Dr. Addison’s private residence in Roman Ridge, Accra, was carried out under a heavy security presence, raising concerns over the conduct of security forces under the new administration.
A Pattern of Political Persecution?
Afenyo-Markin cited a similar raid on the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in February 2025, suggesting a disturbing trend of political persecution.
He called on President John Mahama to intervene and urged civil society organizations and human rights groups to speak out against such actions.
Calls for an Independent Investigation
As of now, neither the government nor the National Security Secretariat has responded to the allegations. However, growing calls for an independent investigation are putting pressure on authorities to address concerns about the conduct of security personnel.
