Ablakwa: Only 156 Ghanaians Facing Deportation from U.S., Not 6,200

Accra, Ghana – Minister-Designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has dismissed reports suggesting that 6,200 Ghanaians face imminent deportation from the United States under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Speaking before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Ablakwa clarified that official information from U.S. authorities indicates a significantly lower number of affected individuals—156, not 6,200.
“There have been publications that about 6,200 Ghanaians will be affected by mass deportation by the United States. But from the brief shared with me by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the numbers are not that high. The official communication from Washington, D.C., is that only 156 Ghanaians currently face deportation,” he stated.
Ablakwa assured Ghanaians that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working closely with U.S. authorities to protect the rights and dignity of those affected.
Since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested over 3,500 unauthorized immigrants nationwide. The administration has also initiated deportation flights using U.S. military aircraft to return migrants to their home countries.
According to estimates by the Pew Research Center, the U.S. currently has 11 million unauthorized immigrants out of a total population of 341 million.
