Legendary Highlife Icon Daddy Lumba Passes Away at 60

Accra, July 25, 2025 — Ghana is in mourning following the passing of Charles Kwadwo Fosu, affectionately known as Daddy Lumba, one of the country’s most celebrated and enduring highlife musicians. He reportedly died this morning at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra.

The family confirmed the news in a brief statement, requesting privacy as they “navigate this profound grief.”

Born on September 29, 1964, Daddy Lumba’s music career spanned over three decades, leaving an indelible mark on the Ghanaian music scene. From his early days in the 1980s as part of the Lumba Brothers duo with Nana Acheampong, to his immensely successful solo career, Lumba released over 30 albums, including classics like Aben Wo Ha, Theresa, Yentie Obiaa, and Playboy.

He was renowned for his distinctive voice, emotionally resonant lyrics, and an uncanny ability to evolve with changing musical trends while remaining true to the highlife tradition.

Daddy Lumba’s influence extended beyond his music. He mentored younger artists, inspired new waves of creativity, and became a cultural icon admired across generations and borders. His passing leaves a monumental void in Ghana’s music and cultural landscape.
