Accra, April 7, 2025 – The Minority in Parliament has urged the government to urgently prioritize the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a strategic response to the recent 10% tariff imposed on Ghanaian exports by the United States.
Background on the Tariff
- U.S. President Donald Trump announced the tariff on April 2, 2025, as part of broader trade measures targeting several nations, including China and the European Union.
- Ghana’s inclusion in the 10% levy list has raised concerns over the country’s economic exposure to the U.S. market.
Minority’s Response & Recommendations
The Minority, led by the Ranking Member on the Committee on Trade, Industry and Tourism, Michael Okyere Baafi, issued a statement outlining key measures for Ghana to mitigate the tariff’s impact:
✅ Prioritize AfCFTA to reduce dependence on Western markets and increase intra-African trade.
✅ Expand exports of manufactured products to other African nations and capitalize on trade diversions from retaliatory tariffs affecting major economies.
✅ Introduce financial aid, training, and market intelligence support for exporters hit by the new tariffs.
✅ Engage in diplomatic efforts to secure an extension or alternative to the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which currently provides Ghana with preferential access to the U.S. market.
What’s Next?
With Ghana’s economic stability and trade competitiveness at stake, the Minority is calling for swift government action to ensure Ghanaian businesses are well-positioned in the evolving global trade environment.
