ASEPA Petitions President Mahama to Remove Auditor General Over Alleged Misconduct

Accra, Ghana – April 3, 2025 – The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has formally petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to initiate constitutional proceedings for the removal of Auditor General, Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu.

The petition, filed on April 3, 2025, at Jubilee House, cites allegations of high crime, misconduct, abuse of office, and constitutional violations.

Key Allegations Against the Auditor General

ASEPA’s petition, invoking Article 187(13) of the 1992 Constitution, outlines the following accusations:

  1. Failure to comply with Supreme Court directives, constituting high crime under Article 2(4) of the Constitution.
  2. Collusion with the Audit Service Board to usurp parliamentary authority, violating Article 187(15).
  3. Unlawful retention of public funds, contravening Section 17(2) of the Audit Service Act.
  4. Abuse of discretionary powers and alleged cover-ups, in breach of Article 296 of the Constitution.

ASEPA’s Call for Action

Speaking on the petition, ASEPA’s Executive Director, Mr. Mensah Thompson, stressed the seriousness of the allegations, stating that the removal process follows the same constitutional procedures as that of the Chief Justice under Article 146.

“The petition marks the beginning of a constitutional process to uphold accountability and ensure that the office of the Auditor General is not compromised,” he said.

Next Steps

The petition has been submitted to the Presidency for further action. If President Mahama acts upon it, the constitutional removal process will be triggered, potentially leading to an investigation into the claims.

This development raises critical concerns about transparency and governance, as ASEPA continues to push for greater accountability within public institutions.
